Thirteen: As told in GIFs
This is a ds106 visual assignment found in the assignment bank and is worth 5 stars. The assignment name is Summarize a movie with animated GIFs. The movie I chose is Thirteen, released in 2003 and directed by Catherine Hardwicke. If you haven’t watched this movie I definitely think it is worth a watch. I do think it is a bit of a heavy movie as it includes topics of self harm, drug abuse, sexual relations, family issues and many more. The movie is about a girl Tracy who starts off as an innocent girl but soon meets someone named Evie who is reblious and the ‘it’ girl of the school. Tracy does he best to get noticed by Evie in hopes of becoming friends and fitting into the cool crowd. As their relationship progresses we see Evie introduce Tracy into alcohol, different types of drugs and a crowd of people who are deemed as trouble. Throughout this Tracy’s relationship with her mother, father and brother is constantly challenged as she turns into a different person her family doesn’t recognize. Without giving too much away Evie eventually feels betrayed by Tracy and Tracy’s mom and pins a lot of the stuff they got into on Tracy. This puts a strain on their relationship and Tracy’s world is turned upside down. One of the things that I really enjoyed about this film is the usage of different color filters that help emulate the feeling of each scene. It starts off really vibrant, goes into more cool and dull tones, and eventually we see the color come back.
Background Information
I used two websites to create the GIFs found in the post. The first being FreeConvert, fair warning you are only allowed 10 free conversions per day. The second website I used was Ezgif, I am not entirely sure if you are limited to a certain amount of conversions as I only needed to convert 4 videos. These websites were pretty easy to navigate and they also allowed for easy downloads. The clips I used were from Youtube and I screen recorded clips I thought did the movie justice.
I actually really enjoyed this assignment and found it interesting to work with different platforms to create GIFs. I honestly thought it would be hard to attempt but again the websites I have linked made the process stress free. I hope I did this movie justice and chose GIFs that summarized it in a meaningful way.
